Acupuncture and Tui Na
Healing using Tui Na (pronounced «twee-NAH») has been practiced for a long time. It was used by the ancient Chinese to balance the chiand was recognized for its vital energy. They believed that it could restore health to joints, organs, muscles, bones and tissues. Due to its curative properties, Tui Na was used by the Chinese as an antidote to poisons and drugs.
Tui Na uses many physical techniques to treat dysfunctional body areas. It is a type of bodywork that increases blood flow, realigns tightly the ligaments that are cleaved, reduces tension and provides many other benefits. Many anatomical or structural disorders can be treated effectively with Tui Na. You can learn Chinese medicine and Tui Na in a private, guided practice or by watching a video or instruction guide on the internet.
Recently I had an interesting conversation with an interesting Spanish professor who is teaching an Tui Na class at a local university. He wanted to learn more about my knowledge of the healing process. I explained that I'd just completed my study on it and that I had also completed a course in Chinese medicine and working with Chinese herbalists. I explained to the Spanish professor that Tui Na is an old version of Chinese medicine, but that it was popular in Europe before it was taken by the Chinese.
According to the Spanish professor, Tui Na's appeal lies in its appeal to both the east and west. While some types of Chinese medicine can be very practical, such as acupuncture or Tai Chi, others are more philosophical such as TCM. He added that in America there are many people who believe that Tui Na is simply another method of selling you products, like energy drinks. This feeling is due to the fact that the majority of those who promote Tui Na don’t understand it. They don't get anywhere with it.
The herbalist explaining Tui Na to me was advocating it on the basis of Qi Gong principles. These are the same principles that I teach in my Kung Fu classes. I explained to the professor that TCM was not something I could recommend to someone who wasn't aware of it. It was also different from Chinese medicine. The professor continued by explaining that he did not understand Qi Gong principles and therefore could not give Tui Na advice to patients who did not have adequate education. He could not sell Tui Na to the general public. I suggested that he distribute it to students with the basics of Chinese medicine for a cost of course but he was not willing to do that.
To translate his statement in English, he stated that Tui Na was simply another scam, an opportunity for him to make money off of people who already had an understanding of the system. This isn't the only explanation, however. Some believe that Professor Yang's description of Tui Na makes it seem less important than Chinese medicine. It has been observed that Tui Na can be difficult to learn and that many people who have achieved proficiency in it find it difficult to continue practicing. This is among the arguments that are used by those who oppose TCM.
Whatever the reason, it is evident that Tui Na has become somewhat of a problem. This could be because many TCM practitioners don't want to invest the time and effort to learn about Chinese medicine. While this is understandable given the demands of life, it raises questions about the validity of the entire enterprise. Arguments that Tui Na is insignificant to Western medicine are founded on the fact that Western medicine has tried to reinvent itself for a long time while the East has been doing the exact thing for hundreds.
While we have to acknowledge the issues with Chinese medicine and Tui Na There are certain areas that require to be addressed. One example of a gap is in the area Tui Na sensitivity. Western medicine uses several herbs to mimic acupuncture, but the truth is that acupuncture works by increasing the body's sensitivity to external stimuli. The body's ability to sense and respond to external stimuli increases Tui Na. This is the reason why it is referred to as «motion related» in Chinese. Thus, Tui Na and acupuncture appear to be two distinct concepts.
